N95 Respirators

2020 Jul 04

N95 respirators are one of nine respirators certified by the NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) for particulate matter.N95 is not a specific product name, as long as it meets the N95 standard and passes the NIOSH review, it can be called N95 mask, and can filter particles with aerodynamic diameter of 0.075 m±0.020 m with efficiency of more than 95%.

Function and Purpose:

The filtration efficiency of N95 respirator for particles with aerodynamic diameter of 0.075 m±0.02 m is above 95%.The aerodynamic diameters of airborne bacteria and fungal spores vary mainly between 0.7 and 10 m, and are also within the protection range of N95 masks. Therefore, N95 respirators can be used for respiratory protection of certain particulate matter, such as dust generated by grinding, cleaning and treating minerals, flour and some other materials, as well as liquid or non-oily particulate matter produced by spraying that does not produce harmful volatile gases. It effectively filters and purifies the odors inhaled (except for toxic gases) and helps reduce exposure to certain inhalable microbiological particles such as mold, Bacillus anthracis, bacillus tuberculosis, etc., but does not eliminate the risk of contact infection, illness, or death.

The U.S. Department of Labor has recommended that health care workers use N95 masks to prevent airborne microbial diseases such as flu and tuberculosis.

Safety standards:

Other NIOSH levels include: N95, N99, N100, R95, R99, R100, P95, P99, and P100.These levels of protection can cover the N95 protection.

"N", meaning not resistant to oil, is suitable for non-oily particles.

"R" means resistant to oil, and is suitable for oily or non-oily particles; if used for oily particles protection, the use time should not exceed 8 hours.

"P" stands for oil proof. It is suitable for oily or non-oily particles. If used for oily particles, the use time should follow the manufacturer's advice.

"95," "99" and "100" are the filtration efficiency levels measured with 0.3 micron particles."95" means the filtration efficiency is above 95%, "99" means the filtration efficiency is above 99%, and "100" means the filtration efficiency is above 99.7%.

Fitness test:

In addition to the filtration efficiency of the mask, the closeness of the mask and the face is one of the important factors determining the effectiveness of the mask. Different types of masks have great differences with the suitability of the human face. Therefore, before using a mask, the mask's suitability should be tested first.Ensure that air can flow in and out of the mask when the mask is close to the face edge during face tightness test.
